About the event
Mycology and Science Outreach in Hawaiʻi and Beyond
Fungi are an understudied group of organisms and mycology is a growing field. This presentation will focus on research conducted in the Amend Lab at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, including the biogeography of marine Malassezia as well as plastic degrading marine fungi. It will also cover research done during summer internships on the topic of desert fungi and fungi that associate with alders in Alaska. Various science outreach efforts that were undertaken will also be discussed.
Ronja Steinbach graduated with honors with a B.S. in marine biology and minor in botany. Since her freshman year she was an AAUW intern at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa working mainly on Title IX, women in STEM, and community building. She plans to attend graduate school, pursuing her PhD at either Boston University, Oregon State, or Stanford starting next fall.
