Tweet Coleman Aviation Scholarship Update

The Tweet Coleman Aviation Scholarship has concluded, however women pilots may apply for funding via our Career and Leadership Development Grant.

We are profoundly grateful to Tweet Coleman for the lasting impact her generosity has had on women pursuing aviation careers in Hawaiʻi. The Tweet Coleman Aviation Scholarship leaves behind a remarkable legacy, and it has been a privilege to match and steward it alongside its namesake and benefactor.

After 35 years of supporting women pilots to take flight, AAUW Honolulu is sunsetting the Tweet Coleman Aviation Scholarship. Tweet continues to support women in aviation in her local community by re-directing her giving to The Florida Aviation Network.

Note for returning applicants

If you were planning to apply this April, please note that the Tweet Coleman Aviation Scholarship will not be accepting applications this cycle or in the future. We encourage you to explore our Career and Leadership Development Grant as an alternative.

A path forward: Career & Leadership Development Grant

AAUW Honolulu remains committed to supporting women in aviation and other male-dominated fields. In response to the conclusion of this scholarship, we have increased our financial commitment to our Career and Leadership Development Grant — and we warmly encourage women in aviation to apply.

This grant supports women pursuing professional development, certifications, training, and leadership opportunities across all fields — including aviation. Over the past two grant cycles, we have awarded grants to pilots through this program.

Applications open annually around August 15.

Check back this summer for application details and eligibility requirements for the Career and Leadership Development Grant.

Letter from Tweet

For the past 35 years, it has been my privilege to support AAUW through the scholarship program. Education and opportunities for women have always been close to my heart, and I am grateful for the many lives that have been touched through this support.

At this time, I have decided to conclude my contribution to the AAUW scholarship and direct my giving to the Florida Aviation Network, a charity closer to my home state and personal mission. This was not an easy decision, as I continue to value AAUW's vital work and the impact it has made.

Please accept my heartfelt appreciation for the opportunity to partner with AAUW over these many years. I wish the organization continued success in empowering women through education and advocacy.

With Gratitude ~ t

"Live with Purpose, Passion & Power"

Described as “energetic” and motivated by challenges” it no surprise that Dr. Tweet Coleman’s career has spanned positions as a Senior FAA Representative at the American Embassy in London, FAA Program Manager and Regional Representative, Boeing 727 & 747 pilot with Continental Airlines, Dale Carnegie communications coach and Surgical nurse with the Cleveland Clinic & Mayo Brothers Clinic.

Jan. 16, 1986, Continental Airlines had the first all-female crew fly from Guam & Saipan to land in Narita, Japan. History was made that day with the first unmanned flight.

In 1990, Tweet started the aviation scholarship with the AAUW Honolulu Branch, 76 female pilots have been awarded a scholarship since then.

AAUW Honolulu is honored to have Tweet as a member, and she’s graciously endowed us with the Tweet Coleman Aviation Scholarship, offered yearly, for women seeking to earn a FAA Pilot Certificate.

The 2025 application is open from March 1, 2025 to April  30, 2025.
