Talk Story with Beatrice Chinen

Beatrice Chinen holds a BS and MS in Chemistry from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. As the current UH Mānoa Research Stockroom Manager, she handles procurement and fiscal management of a large inventory of chemicals and lab supplies, supporting research activities throughout the UH system. Beatrice used the AAUW Honolulu Career and Leadership Development Grant to attend the 50th Annual Conference of the National Organization of Scientific Materials Managers (NAOSMM) in New Orleans in August 2023.

At the conference, Beatrice attended informative sessions on everything from regulatory compliance to avoiding professional burnout. She networked with fellow NAOSMM professionals, including some with decades of experience, and was inspired by their passion and commitment. She also made contact with over 40 scientific materials vendors, including many independent suppliers offering special discounts. The experience afforded invaluable connections and insights that she will use to continue improving the Research Stockroom and become a more effective manager.
