AAUW Honolulu Women's Circle: A Year of Connection and Growth

By Barbara Bumatay Picayo

For over a year now, AAUW Honolulu has been proud to host our Women's Circle—a space that has blossomed into something truly special for our community. What began as an initiative to create meaningful connections for women in the workplace has evolved into a vibrant forum where women from diverse backgrounds gather to share experiences, insights, and support one another in an atmosphere of mutual respect and understanding.

The Perfect Balance

With an average attendance of 20 women at each gathering, our Women's Circle has struck the perfect balance: large enough to generate dynamic, multifaceted discussions while remaining intimate enough for participants to feel comfortable sharing personal experiences and perspectives.

Engaging Topics That Matter

Our discussions have centered around themes that resonate deeply with women's professional and personal development:

  • Workplace Satisfaction: Exploring what fulfillment means in our professional lives

  • Leadership: Navigating the unique challenges and opportunities for women in leadership roles

  • Career Futures and Transitions: Preparing for and embracing change

  • Career Transitions Hana Hou: Revisiting this popular topic with a deeper dive

  • Advocating for Yourself: Developing the confidence and skills to stand up for your needs and worth

Looking ahead, we're excited to facilitate conversations on mentorship, budgeting and finance, and time management—topics chosen based on feedback from our community and designed to address real-world challenges women face.

Supporting Women in Business

Our commitment to women's advancement extends beyond conversation. At each Women's Circle, we proudly serve delicious, health-conscious lunches exclusively from women-owned or women-managed establishments. We've been delighted to feature cuisine from:

  • O'Kim's Korean Kitchen

  • Tucker and Bevy

  • UpRoll Cafe

  • Sprout Sandwich

  • Palama Market

In the coming months, we look forward to supporting other women-led culinary ventures including Istanbul, Roots Cafe, Vegan Eats, and Le's Banh Mi. This intentional choice reflects our commitment to supporting women across all sectors of our community.
